Workshops For Ages 4 - 8

Design A Balloon Car Using Newton’s Theory

When you just let a balloon go on its own, it tends to randomly fly around the room, and is almost impossible to steer. However, when you attach the balloon to a car you can harness the balloon's energy to propel the car forward. The challenge in this workshop will be to design, build, and test a car that is powered by nothing but a balloon. Using Newton’s theory, let’s see whose car will go the furthest!

Workshops For Ages 9 - 12

Assemble A Remote Control Car as An Electric Engineer

In this workshop we will learn the basic of different car parts. We will dive into the difference between traditional cars and electric cars. Using this new knowledge, we will assemble our own remote control car. You will need to think like an electric engineer to make sure your car runs smoothly. After completing the car, have a race in our Big Bang Arena to see who is the fastest!

  • Hosted by Big Bang Academy
  • For ages 9 - 12
  • Language of Instruction: English (with Cantonese interpretation)
  • Available sessions: 24, 25, 31 July 2021; 1, 7, 8, 14 - 20 August 2021
  • Price: $361

Power to the Magnets!

Have you wondered what the fancy word electromagnetism means? In this lab we will use a rule of thumb to generalize how magnetic force can be generated in a simple electric circuit. Equipped with this knowledge, we will construct self-driven magnetic metros by the use of electromagnetism.

Make Your Own Battery!

Have you ever wondered how batteries generate streams of electrons to drive electric and electronic appliances? In this lab we investigate the origins and inner workings of Volta’s battery, and we will construct fruit batteries in different connection schemes to investigate their voltage and current outputs.

  • Hosted by Arch Education

Crash Something, Safely

Have you ever wondered how race car drivers walk out of high-speed crashes like nothing had happened? Car safety features rely heavily on the understanding of Newton’s laws of motion, so to minimize the impacts and power of collisions. In this lab we learn Newton’s laws so to understand how lives can be preserved in “inelastic collisions”. We will also compete for a recipe of ballistic jelly to minimize the power of collision.

  • Hosted by Arch Education
  • For ages 10 - 12
  • Language of Instruction: English
  • Available sessions: 14 & 20 August 2021

How to Train A Computer

Sensors are everywhere and they allow us to detect changes that are happening in our world. However, sensors only speak in zeros and ones, and we must equip ourselves to command and understand these tiny helpers. In this lab we construct circuits using sensors, microcontroller (the computer brain) and a display unit to detect and display temperature and humidity readings, just like a smart home device.

Shocking Statics!

Ever been shocked by the seemingly random discard of static electricity? In this lab we investigate how static electricity can be generated by the triboelectric effect. We will charge up various materials so to compare their charge generation ability, and to unveil the mystery of Van De Graff generator. At the end of the investigation, you will be able to explain how lightning strikes happen like a meteorologist!
